Faculty Members – PPGEP

The faculty of the Graduate Program in Fisheries Engineering (PPGEP) is composed of PhD-level professors with extensive academic and scientific experience, dedicated to the training of qualified professionals and to advancing knowledge in their fields.

Faculty members are engaged in teaching, research, and the supervision of master’s dissertations and doctoral theses. They are organized into two research lines, which reflect the program’s interdisciplinary scope and scientific depth:

🧬 Genetics, Aquaculture, and Conservation of Fishery Resources

Focuses on the development of sustainable cultivation techniques for aquatic organisms, biodiversity conservation, applied genetics in aquaculture and fisheries, and the management of aquatic resources in both natural and farmed environments.

  • Prof. Carminda Sandra Brito Salmito Vanderley, PhD – Works with reproductive biotechnology of fish and shrimp, including artificial insemination and assisted fertilization.
    Lattes | ORCID
  • Prof. Caroline Vieira Feitosa, PhD – Researches fishery sustainability and marine biodiversity conservation, focusing on population biology and fish ecology.
    Lattes
  • Prof. Helena Matthews-Cascon, PhD – Studies mollusk systematics and morphology, contributing to marine biodiversity conservation.
    Lattes | ORCID
  • Prof. Larissa Rosa de Oliveira, PhD – Investigates the effects of climate change on marine mammals, with focus on conservation and One Health.
    Lattes | ORCID
  • Prof. Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e Sá, PhD – Specialist in limnoculture and water quality in aquaculture, with emphasis on water management and nutrition.
    Lattes
  • Prof. Rafael dos Santos Rocha, PhD – Works in aquatic animal pathology and microbiological diagnostics, with experience in detecting pathogens in aquaculture environments.
    Lattes | ORCID
  • Prof. Rodrigo Maggioni, PhD – Conducts research in evolutionary genetics, applying molecular tools to conservation and aquaculture.
    Lattes | ORCID
  • Prof. Vicente Vieira Faria, PhD – Works on marine fish conservation and ecology, with emphasis on sharks, rays, and the evolutionary genetics of threatened species.

Policy for Faculty Accreditation and Reaccreditation

The PPGEP periodically conducts the reaccreditation of its permanent faculty members based on academic and institutional criteria. Professors are evaluated according to:

  • Alignment of research with the Program’s research areas;
  • Availability of research infrastructure to supervise students;
  • Commitment to PPGEP policies (e.g., teaching, participation in committees and thesis boards);
  • Scientific productivity, based on the indices EqA1 (minimum 3) and EqA1 Superior (minimum 1.5), considering publications in Qualis-ranked journals.

New faculty members follow similar criteria, in addition to:

  • Availability to supervise Master’s and Doctoral students;
  • Teaching at least one in-person course per year;
  • Participation in research labs (as coordinator or collaborator);
  • Involvement in academic and administrative committees.

More information can be found in the Program’s Supplementary Guidelines.
